The results of source research of the memoirs of the guerrilla-war veteran and documents of the partisan detachment, the stages and participants in the Rzhev-Vyazma operation, the problems of encirclements are shown; the special attention is drown to the causes of errors in the calculations of the losses of the Red Army. Certain War participants mentioned in the analyzed documents were verified, including captain P.E. Grigoriev and lieutenant I.L. Sukach killed in the battle of July 18, 1941, who are mentioned in the OBD «Memorial» as missing.
